Frederick A. Shinners, Jr., Optometrist

Dr. Shinners was born in Ottawa, Illinois, at the junction of the Fox and Illinois Rivers. Or as they say in Indiana, Illinois. He and his family lived there for almost 4 years before moving to Vienna, West Virginia. Growing up there really formed the foundation of many of his beliefs.

After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio. It was a great experience. Thomas Wolfe said that you can’t go home again, but Dr. Shinners would say that they sure didn’t go to UD! Go Flyers!! Graduating in 1994 from Southern College of Optometry, in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Shinners spent the next five years working for a very busy practice.

In September of 1999, He felt it was time to fulfill a dream of his and open his own practice. “I couldn’t think of any other place I would want to be,” Says Dr. Shinners. In 2002, he married his wife Sarah, who helps him run the office, and became the father of 4 wonderful kids. So here he is, full time Optometrist, full time father.

He is active in the community and regularly provides vision screenings at local schools as well as supporting the Hootie and the Blowfish’s Hometown Days and E.C.C.O. In his spare time Dr. Shinners loves to play golf, travel and read books on Military History.

Sarah Shinners, Office Manager, Owner

It’s exciting to be a key part of a progressive, leading edge practice. It’s one of my jobs though to make sure that you’re comfortable being here and feel welcomed. We know the technology can be overwhelming for some patients. If you have any suggestions to help us reach our goal of – ‘patients first – always!’ – please let me know!
Sarah, is originally from Portland Oregon. Sarah wears quite a few hats around the office and Shinners household. Besides being the office manager, she is also the IT specialist. When she is not at the office, she spends a lot of time raising her 4 kids, Michael, Angelia, and the twins; Alex and Heather, and cooking up gourmet meals!

Matt Hodges, Optician

Some tests are done at our office before you see the doctor. These are designed to give the doctor some important information to help him/her better understand the condition of your eyes and vision. Our well trained clinic staff is responsible for this aspect of your examination called pretesting. They are also responsible for guiding you through some tests the doctor may feel are necessary after the examination such as visual field testing, digital retinal photographs and contact lens instruction.
Matt is also our Optician extraordinaire! Whether it is a new frame or repairing your old one, if Matt can’t do it, it probably can’t be done. Matt is the son of Billy Hodges, late owner of Hodges Optical, a well known and respected optician in the Charleston Area.
